Air Corrosion Testing

Corrosion coupons based on the ISA-71.04 standard are widely used to monitor and evaluate air quality in environments where electronic equipment is sensitive to corrosion. These coupons provide a direct, quantitative measure of the corrosive potential of an environment by reacting with airborne contaminants to form a corrosion film. The analysis of this film helps classify the environment into categories such as G1, G2, G3, or GX, as defined by the ISA-71.04-2013 standard.

Typical applications include:

Corrosion coupons should be placed in locations where environmental conditions need to be evaluated for their corrosive effects on electronic equipment or sensitive components. Here are common placement areas:

  • Inside critical equipment enclosures: To check if the environment within enclosures is affecting the performance or longevity of electronics

  • Near air intake points: These locations help determine the quality of the air entering sensitive areas and the effectiveness of filtration systems

  • Strategic points in data centers: Such as server racks or areas with high airflow to identify potential risks to infrastructure.

  • Industrial settings: Near machinery, control rooms, or process areas where airborne contaminants are likely present.

The coupons should be positioned to accurately reflect the air quality, avoiding direct contamination (like oil or grease). They're often left for a specific time (e.g., 30 days) before being analyzed for corrosion film thickness and composition
